Pretzels in my M&M's? The future is now. What a time to be alive.

Maybe.. It's an Alien trick.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. This is very important. The fate of the world might hinge on this knowledge. In the event that I develop super powers and attempt a take over of the Earth, M&M's Peanuts are my Kryptonite. Yes, those wonderful little egg shaped, chocolate covered peanut, candy coated delights have knocked me on my butt more than a few times (but always in an "oh so good way"). Knowing this you can only imagine my glee when I read that M&M's Pretzels were finally available. I needed to try them. So a few weeks ago I bought a 430 gram bag to test.

I will start by saying that the M&M's arm of Mars Corp does not own me outright. Truthfully, the only master I serve is M&M's Peanuts. In general I'm not a huge fan of regular M&M's. Not that I won't eat them, but I think Canadian Smarties are far superior in taste. While I enjoy M&M's Peanut Butter they're really just big Reese's Pieces, not a bad thing, just not what I want. Almond is okay and the Dark Chocolate ones would be great in cookies but not something I would eat for a snack. Pretzel might be different though. I have a history with chocolate covered pretzels. I love the Purdy's version and have often referred to them as "chocolate crack." So I knew that M&M's Pretzels had great potential, but could they dethrone the reigning champ?

Time to find out.

After leaving them untouched for a few days I finally succumbed to temptation and curiosity. I opened the bag and offered some to my brother and his girlfriend. They passed with a "not right now, maybe later." All righty. So I sat down, turned on the TiVo and munched away.

First impression: “oooo these are good.”

Then..
.
.
..I blacked out.

The next thing I remember was reaching into the package for another M&M and not finding one. I shifted the bag around and still nothing. “Hmmm?” I shook the bag, no sound. Horror and disgust materialize on my face as I look down to find the bag empty. “Bu wha happen?”

So yeah, they were good.

What's awesome about them (besides the obvious) is that there is a thin salted layer just beneath the candy shell that surrounds the chocolate covered pretzel. It might sound kind of gross, but it's not. They are not overly salty and the added sweetness of the shell definitely aids in this regard. When you take one complete crunch it's a good balance of flavours (if you're a salty sweet person. If you're not, why try them in the first place? Self loathing?).

M&M's Pretzels are tiny spheres of salty-sweet-bite-sized-awesomeness and that's, if you didn't know, a good thing :). However, they will not replace my love of the M&M Peanut. Those guys have a hold on me that I cannot fully describe :). M&M's Pretzels are really good (really really good) and will sit in a comfortable second place. I highly suggest you try them, but heed my warning: Eat them when not paying attention and you too may find yourself with lost time, an empty bag, and a soul full of shame :) (at least it's a satisfied shame :) ).

My concluding thoughts can be summed up in Homer Simpson's quote from the 1974 Springfield High Yearbook: “I can't believe I ate the whole thing” (bonus points to those who know the original reference :)).

Out of 5: M&M's Pretzels receive a 5 on the bloated gut rub scale :).
